Attempted to download your pdf's, but for some reason they wouldn't open, so have asked that question elsewhere.
Attempted to sort about 30 lines of text alphabetically by 1st word or even letter of each line.
1) First problem is using windows Control/A won't select (using Win7 & it works elsewhere). So dragging the cursor down allowed all to be highlighted.
2) Tools/Sort/Criteria-Key1/alphanumeric-descending, even add to key 2 and 3. No sorting took place
3) With what little reading I've been able to do it appears that sorting applies to tables only? Does that mean I need to set up a table before text sorting can be accomplished? And if so, guess I need to do considerable reading. In the meantime as time is of the essence to complete this project, guess I need to use my old computer and WordPerfect which sorts without difficulty.

This works for me with Libreoffice 3.4.4 on Win 7. I put in a few lines beginning with different letters in the first position, then Ctrl A to select all then Tools-->Sort.

Sorting works for tables or regular text. It does sort paragraphs, so each item must be a separate paragraph, and you have to select the items before you sort. Use View > Non-printing characters to show the paragraph breaks: ¶ If you see anything else between the items, sorting won't work.

Thanks very much, it worked like a charm!! Hopefully today the site is up and running and I can read and learn a bit. For instance I need to change the default page size; however it was an easy change simply by using Help. And the same for displaying the paragraph icon. Even though it was selected under View/Non-printing characters, it didn't appear on the page. So had to select it in Options as well.

For some reason today it won't sort. Doing the same as before:
1) Inserted at beginning a, b, c, d, e, f, each followed by return
2) Selected several rows (a varying quantity from 15 to 30.
3) tools/sort.
It returns with a warning window cannot sort.
Currently my internet connection is almost at a standstill and am waiting for untrustworthy old ATT to do something about it, but don't think that should relate to sorting on my computer, should it -- in other words, it shouldn't require internet contact to sort within the oOo.

I haven't a clue what the problem might be.
It might be easiest if you can attach your document--or at least a sample of it--here for us to try. You can use the "Upload Attachment" link (below the message entry area after you click "POST REPLY"). For tips on posting large or confidential documents, see: [Forum] How to attach a document here

Thought it might relate to each row starting with a hyperlink, but removed a few hyperlinks and selected those rows only and still received window "cannot sort selection". Incidentally is there an easy way to remove all hyperlinks from a document? -- what I've tried is highlighting the hyperlink and right clicking and selecting "delete hyperlink." However that doesn't always appear and it's frequently very difficult to select the hyperlink only with the space following it.
Cannot attach a file that ends in .sxw. Wonder if sort will work if I change the file to .txt?

Sort works if change format to .txt. Apparently it won't sort .sxw. That strikes me as being quite strange!
However, all of the editing needed and then changing to .txt requires far too much editing primarily due to when copy from Craigslist cannot dictate needed columns & extra spaces, so each line is too long.

.sxw is the old Star Office binary format. I would not recommend using it; all you have to do is change the file type when you save the document. You'll still have the old format as a backup.
However, I don't see any problem sorting text paragraphs in a .sxw document, so I'm not sure that has anything to do with the sorting issue.
Is the document read-only, but any chance? Look at the title bar at the very top of the Writer window.

Evidently .sxw is the default when saving a file. What should the default be, and how can it be changed?
Don't believe it's read only, but I can't fine where that is located. Don't find a setting in Options either. Doubtful it's read only since I can open it anew and make changes.
And it was interesting that after many attempt to sort the .sxw file when I saved another copy as .txt oOo had no difficulty sorting on the 1st and 2nd attempts.

For ODF format version you want 1.2 Extended, and for Document type/Text document you want ODF Text Document. If Document type/Text document says OpenOffice.org 1.0 Text Document, that is your problem.

Not following you. Am using oOo 3.3, and it was 1.2 extended; however, not odf text document, so I've just changed that. Now will go in and rechange it to format odf text document, xxxx.odt, is that right? Then will try to sort. That didn't work, it still reads "cannot sort."

Well, I hope it solved the format problem. I have failed to reproduce the sort problem, unfortunately.

I'm beginning to wonder if the problem isn't in the OOo settings profile. The file format setting should not need to be changed, so I'm wondering if there could be other problems in there as well. Frankly, I don't see how the profile could interfere with sorting, but who knows? It could be worth a try and I don't know what else to suggest.
If that doesn't help, I think I would do a complete re-install of OOo.
Oh, hold on. Here's one last test: open the attached Writer document, Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A), then Tools > Sort, OK. Does it work?

Right. Attach your file and let us take a look at it. You can use the "Upload Attachment" link (below the message entry area after you click "POST REPLY"). For tips on posting large or confidential documents, see: [Forum] How to attach a document here
As you mentioned, the forum won't accept .sxw, so you'll have to either upload it to a free hosting service (like mediafire.com), or put the document into a zip archive and attach that here. Sorry, I can't give any specific steps for doing that in Vista.

Finally getting back into this -- have been quite busy attempting to sell stuff in Craigslist and eBay -- an ongoing task which had better be soon completed!
At this time can save a list as .txt and it sorts as it should by adding a few paragraph numbers or alphas at the beginning -- I've been using alphas and then they need deleting which is difficult due to they are interspersed amongst the entry lines. Next time will try numbers and all should be at the beginning.
It still will not sort .odt format which is preferable as opposed to sorting as .txt because that changes the output requiring some editing. When there's time later this week I'll make a zip and upload it to a free hosting service as you mentioned. Now there's more photo work for selling stuff -- now a potential buyer wants several closeups so I need to lay out about 15 things and use the macro on the camera. And need to do that now before the sun reaches the side of my house.
